Deputy Secretary General Muttahida Majlas-e-Amal Liaquat Baloch has apprehended that after settling the uniform issue and completion of the Local Government elections, President Musharraf may resort to abrogating Constitution in order to replace the parliamentary form of government with the presidential one.
"Such a move, Baloch said, "will pave way for a permanent role of the armed forces in politics. The MMA will never accept supremacy of the army over politics, parliament and constitution," he said, adding nor would it compromise on the Islamic and ideological identity of the country.
Talking to alliance workers at an Iftar party, he said the MMA would launch mass contact drive against the economic policies of the government after Eidul Fitr. He warned that if any attempt were made to obstruct the holding of such drive, the MMA would launch a nation-wide protest movement. "By keeping the positions of army chief and president simultaneously, Gen. Musharraf had created a crisis that led to political instability in the country," he stated.
Mr. Baloch slammed government for blindly toeing American agenda in the country. He termed government's Madaris registration move as cruel and an attempt to appease the US.
