Ulema declare suicide attacks un-Islamic

The Muttahida Ulema-Council on October 14 issued a fatwa (decree) declaring suicide attacks in country haram (illegal) and najaaiz (unlawful).

‘Suicide attacks in Pakistan are illegal and unlawful, but apparently it seems to be that the govt is behind this violence so that patriotic Pakistanis could not launch movement for country’s solidarity, and gather at one point in millions. In view of the present circumstances, the govt must immediately stop supporting US war on terror, and if it would not do so, then we will announce Jihad against the present rulers’.

The unanimous decree was announced at the conclusion of the Council’s meeting, attended by ulema of Jama’at Ahl-e-Sunnat, Ahl-e-Tashee, Ahl-e-Hadees, and the Deobandi and Barelvi schools of thought.
Dr Sarfraz Naeemi said that it seemed that the govt was backing the suicide attackers to sabotage any movement launched by the people.
‘Ulema should know their role, and instead of blaming the politicians and rulers, must give call to the masses to rise against the US stooges after shunning their differences’, he said.
He further said that in the Friday sermons, ulema should apprise people about the US policies so that the people could be prepared mentally for a movement. He also hinted at holding a national conference by the Ulema Council in the coming days.
While outrightly rejecting the in-camera briefing to the Parliament, he demanded of the govt to stop fighting US war on terror.
He said that the masses should have been told about the situation instead of giving an in-camera briefing to the Parliament, which should only formulate policies and guide the nation.
Ameer Jama’at-ud-Dawa Hafiz Muhammad Saeed said that the closed-door Parliamentary meeting was meant to follow Pervez Musharraf’s policies. ‘Despondency is being spread through media, he added.

Just declaring these attacks as Un-Islamic is not enough. Although this is a step in the right direction, the Ulemas have to come out more stongly and publicly against this. They should come out on the streets just as they do with all other matters that they feel affects them and condemn those who carry out these attacks in the strongest possible language. They need to this on war footing and make it the Jihad that we all need.

I agree with you that just a condemnation is not enough, and certain tangible steps are required including long-term policies.
Thank you for the comments!
