Govt for maximum funds in treating cancer

Minister Health Punjab Dr. Tahir Ali Javed said the government was providing maximum funds for prevention and treatment of cancer, and in order to achieve the targets, the Provincial government would establish the Punjab Institute of Oncology with a cost of Rs 2 billion at Lahore to provide the treatment facilities to cancer patients at subsidised rates at local level.
He expressed these views while addressing the inaugural session of the 12th Cancer Congress held by Society of Clinical Oncology Pakistan at Faisalabad on Friday.
Dr. Tahir informed the participants that all out cooperation and grant was being provided to the teaching hospitals for the functioning of radiation system, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, whereas, new radiation machine system had been installed at the teaching hospitals of the province and mammography machines have been installed at Oncology Department Punjab Medical College and Jinnah Hospital Lahore and for the diagnostic and treatment purposes of Breast Cancer. “The majority of patients present with advanced disease requiring palliative care, radiotherapy are the most cost effective modality for 90 percent of these patients and Punjab has largest number of radiotherapy oncology treatment facilities in the country,” he added.
The Minister said under a pilot project cancer registry system would be launched at Lahore and required funds would be provided for this purpose. “More research facilities would be provided to the young doctors of oncology and cooperation of local and international donors will be received for the better registry system in this field whereas, government will provide cooperation for the holding of such conferences so that experience of the doctors can be exchanged with each other,” he said.
Prof. Dr. Shaheryar, Prof. Dr. Ibrar Ahmed Javed, Prof. Dr. H. M. Zaidi, Principal PMC, Dr. AG Rehan and experts from inland and outland on Oncology presented their thesis.
Earlier, the Minister addressed the academic council of Punjab Medical College and also inaugurated four gynaecology operation theatres and labour rooms constructed with a grant of Rs 62 million at allied hospital.
