Nation awakes to the tragedy

In the wake of the recent devastations caused by the earthquake, a lot of people are contributing substantially to the relief efforts without any wish for publicity, as contrary to the politico-religious parties, and other organisations seeking applause for their efforts.
This nation seems to be awake to the tragedy and every individual wants to do any thing possible within his means, and in certain cases even beyond his own subsistence level. One can see every person doing something for the earthquake affectees.
"‘Give whatsoever one can give for this cause’ is the slogan we are working on. If somebody contributes Rs 5 or Rs 50,000 is not a matter of huge interest, though the latter is definitely appreciable," said Qazi Riaz Hussain, who along with a few of his neighbours, is collecting edibles, necessarily dry, and anything wearable and usable for the earthquake victims. Today, they will again go from door-to-door for their collections in their vicinity of Garden Town. "We are depositing these things with the Army because we believe that it is the safest organisation, and it will be distributing these things to the deserving people. We are also purchasing dry edibles with the money people are contributing," he added. Qazi also plans to purchase funeral shrouds for the dead from the contributions.
On the other hand, sales of stores have gone up. "Our sales have definitely gone high as compared to our routine because people are buying dry items," said Kamran Shaikh, who is running a general store in Faisal Town. "Generous people are purchasing rice, sugar, flour, and other edibles from us. If I come to know that they are buying these things for the earthquake affectees, I give concession as well because I am also a Pakistani and deeply pained by the sufferings and deaths," he added. He maintained that his sales had increase by about Rs 4,000 during the last two days.
On the other hand, family connections are also being used by the people, who are involved in this welfare drive. "I have been contacted by quite a few friends and relatives of mine to contribute something for the cause. I know that they are all honest people, and none of them will be doing any thing wrong," said Abdul Munaaf, a resident of Allama Iqbal Town, whose father-in-law had asked him for the contributions. Without mentioning the number of things, and the contribution he has made himself, Munaaf maintained that he did not deem it positive because "I am doing it for the blessings of Allah, which I will acquire by serving his people who are suffering now," he added. Munaaf had also called his family members for the contributions.
One of the major driving forces behind these men involved in the welfare work, are the females, who seem to be in a state of shock over the deaths and devastation caused by the earthquake. "I have told my husband and son to do everything possible for the victims. Moreover, I have talked to all of my friends and neighbours to contribute substantially," said Samina Hussain.
Quite a large number of people are participating in relief efforts on their own and they do not have any connection with any of the parties or organisations. "We have collected Rs 2.7 million from Abid Market in just one go. We were virtually shocked to see the response of the shopkeepers, who contributed from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1,00,000," said Mian Mehmood, a local trader.
Private camps have been established by the people, who are collecting things and giving to the major camps established in the city. They are not looking for publicity, while quite a large number of them are also wishing to get their names published in the print media.
On the other hand, students of schools, colleges and universities, both public private, and young children are making collections in their respective institutes. "I want people must stop huge spendings on Iftaris. They must reduce their tables in size and desist from lavishness. The saved money can be contributed for the noble cause. I have asked my class fellows not to celebrate this Eid because our brothers are in pain," said Ahmed Bilal of a local university, who has along with friends, arranged a camp within the premises of the institute.
Messaging on mobiles is another aspect of this drive, and all the mobile users are receiving messages at least five messages a day from friends, mobile company and others in this regard. "We are alive to this tragedy, and such messages continuously remind us of our brethren who are suffering," said Abdul Munaaf.
